MORE ABOUT FINISHES
Hardware Products used in the marine industry are mainly of the following materials and all these materials need finish treatment:
Aluminum Brass Stainless Steel
ALUMINUM The preferred finish for aluminum is anodizing. This process creates a very hard molecular coating. This coating has very good characteristics in regards to resisting corrosion. The nature of anodizing is satin. Very little maintenance is required when the coatings are applied correctly.
- Industrial anodizing should be used for parts that need to be protected but are not in view.
- Decorative anodizing should be applied to fully visible parts.
- These coatings can be obtained in many colors: black, brown, white, gold and silver.

BRASS Brass can be lacquered or polished.
- LACQUERED: This is an inferior finish for marine applications because pitting can occur anytime due to nicking the lacquer coating. Plating of brass is also a poor performer is a marine environment.
- POLISHED: If brass is just polished, a dark patina will form over time. The patina, which is the result from a slow oxidation, protects the brass and actually slows down the process of oxidation.

NICKEL Nickel will tarnish (turning dark) over time. Nickel has a poor performance in salt tests and marine environments.
CHROME Chrome is a hard coating that can protect brass against heavy use, salt on UV influences; however, the chrome plating needs to be applied extremely well and it needs to kept clean from salt residue at all times. Pitting will occur over time.
STAINLESS STEEL Stainless Steel is the preferred material for marine hardware.
- POLISHED: For exterior applications we recommend the use of mirror polished stainless steel.
- SATIN: Satin Stainless Steel is recommended for interior use only.

PVD COATINGS PVD coatings are superior coating for a marine environment (see page 0.01 and 002 of the catalog). They are best applied on stainless steel, but they can be applied to many substrates, brass, including plastic, if the surfaces are prepared well.
- They are a perfect alternative for gold plating, polished lacquered brass and nickel plated surfaces.
- PVD coatings are very hard and are virtually impervious to salt, UV and infra red light.
- Izerwaren offers PVD coating with limited life time warrantee in the colors gold, brass and nickel.
